The Betosala Program, Working Hand in Hand with Congolese Businesses

In late 2015, the first phase of the Moho Nord project began production offshore of the Republic of the Congo in 2015. For local businesses, Moho Nord is a real opportunity for growth. To help these companies make the most of this opportunity, Total has set up a support initiative entitled “BETOSALA” (inspired by beto sala kintuadi, which means “let’s work together” in the Munukutaba language).

An innovative vision of community engagement

The Betosola initiative illustrates this commitment by helping SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) to meet Total’s quality, safety, environmental and management standards. These Congolese SMEs are given the skills and resources not only to work with our group, but also to help their business diversify and thrive.

It's an innovative way of seeing local content, more usually limited to the life of projects.

Enriching collaboration with SMEs

The program has four steps:

1. Identification of local businesses with potential for development, in priority areas identified by Total in the Congo.

2. Selection of businesses.

3. The selected businesses are offered support tailored to their needs, including mentoring and training, awareness of business requirements, coaching in implementing standards, etc., giving them the skills and resources they need to win tenders issued by Total — or other major industrial companies — in the Congo.

4. Monitoring of local businesses that have won our invitations to tender, to help them carry out their role according to the requirements of the subsidiary.

Working with international companies willing to "mentor" is how local businesses make the most progress. In the Congo, Total plans to encourage its own partners — other international companies taking part in the Moho Nord project — to set up similar skills transfer programs and to work with Congolese small businesses.

In a country that depends on the oil industry for nearly 75% of budget revenues, diversifying the economy and creating local jobs represent two major challenges for the country’s Economic Diversification Support Program (EDSP). Through the Betosala initiative, Total is actively contributing to the implementation of EDSP. As part of the EDSP, Congolese companies receive technical training so they can be qualified and/or certified in new skills.
